The
Médiathèque of Boulogne at ESPACE Landowsky,
near Paris was entirely redesigned in 1998. As
a modern « multimedia » complex of
3,700 m2 on 4 levels, the Mediathèque incorporates two
important AV systems for the Auditorium and for
the Youth Department.
People
coming to the auditorium in the Mediathèque may ask to
listen to any of the 15,000 CDs available ; the
auditorium hostess has at her disposal 8 CD readers , 6
VHS and 1 DVD. People sit in a comfortable space, among
8 audio listening points and 5 TV points. The
second system in the Children's Department is fitted
with 6 audio listening points and 1 TV point.
The
challenge was to find a solution that connects the
various sources to all destinations, including several
« ambiance » music zones and video
monitoring without signal loss, and facilities for the
desk people to use the system with quick access and
permanent visualisation
of the system’s status.
Working
with «E. I. Audiovisuel, Nanterre », who
realised the whole audio-visual installation, the first
choice concerned the routing switcher. Due to a wide
range of products, excellent specifications and easy
RS232 remote control, E. I. Audiovisual chose a KNOX
routing switcher, the CHAMELEON 64 configured as a 32 x
16 video and stereo audio model for the auditorium and a
16 x 16 video with stereo audio for the youth
department. Furthermore,
a VITY 10’’4 TFT touch panel was provided to control
each routing switcher with a clear user-friendly
interface, also designed by VITY.
It offers the user a simple grid to make each
crosspoint with a single touch and color graphics to
indicate the status of the routing switcher in each cell
of the grid. Mrs
Bertrand V., the Director of the Music Department,
states : « I find the
system extremely easy to use with the touch panel
and I can quickly adapt to any situation ; So, I
have more time to focus on relationship with the people. ».
At a single glance, the user knows exactly the status of
the routing switcher. Leila Mjid at the youth department
said : « I find the system very practical and the
visualisation helps me to detect when small children
leave the listening post without warning ». The
touch panel has a built PCI card running at 133 Mhz and
a Hard disk 2’’5 with Windows 3.1 to support the
software. Due to the size of the routing switcher, it
was necessary to have moving arrows to reach the
non-visible rows and columns and this made necessary to
use a Windows OS. So, the touch panel was very easy to
cable as it is directly
connected by RS 232 to the KNOX routing switcher.
